To begin this quest, you must walk near and discover a particular corpse lying in a corner in Wased-Heq, South of the Temple of Anubis.
Once the corpse is discovered, you will be promted to investigate. First you'll look at the dead jackals strange wounds and note the kind of overkill that is typical of a ritualistic murder.
After investigating you'll be prompted to report the murder to the Watch. Apparently, this kind of thing has been going. Also, apparently, the symbols carved into the victim's flesh are significant, and you will be prompted to find and speak to potential witnesses. The witnesses are nearby and are as follows:
Speaking with the loitering Jackal is the straight shot to the next portion of the quest. You'll be prompted then to find a Scribe.
Go through the dialogue, absorb all that thicc, juicy lore, and then return to the "Stranger" from before.
Speaking to the Stranger again, he'll tell you he knows about the mark of Atá, but wishes to speak with you in a more private space, and thus leads you toward his home which he promptly enters when reached, shutting the door on your snout. How rude.
When you try to unlock the door and come in behind him, he begins speaking in riddles through the closed door like a weirdo. None of the responses you give will get him to open the door, and you will be prompted to find out more about Atá. Return to the scribe. After inquiring about a secret password, the Scribe will give you a [Scribe's Fragmented Notes On Atá].
After sounding off the secret knock, you are asked riddles. We love riddles, don't we?
The first riddle goes "In fine silk am I adorned, great jewels and gilding all about me... yet none but common thieves may witness my majesty. What am I?"
The possible answers are as follows:
The second riddle: "A lone warrior standing sentinel. The charge sustains me. Retreat does not fell me. Only in victors do I die. What am I?"
The possible answers are as follows:
The third and final riddle: "Above gates I reside, guarding nought but ecstasy. Never can I be lost, though by some I am yet seldom found. What am I?"
The possible answers are as follows:
The Stranger is revealed as Mered, who denies killing anyone. Apparently we assumed he was the murderer given the fact he's suspicious and weird. This is how witch hunts are started ya know?
You will discover that the dead bodies are believed by Mered to be "errant flesh", zombies basically, who have had their spirits taken or claimed by Atá.
You have some options now. You can hear him out, which will progress the quest, or you can turn him in to the Watch or kill him.
Agree to serve Atá at you will be allowed to interact with the Tome of Atá, speaking to the spirit possessing it. Atá himself, trapped within the tome, or so he claims. You also discover through speaking to him that he indeed has been just getting Mered to kill people for him so he can devour their souls, and the theory of "errant flesh" is a lie.
Atá wants you to kill someone, and you can either refuse or accept the mission.
If you agree to do as Atá commands, he will task you with kill the scribe. You will be given Ritual Daggers to kill her with.
Killing the Scribe ends the quest.
