Dear Father,
I don't really know how to say this, so I'm just going to write it out as the thoughts come to me. I know you've done your best to raise me, and you've done a fantastic job. I want for nothing, and you've instilled in me a strong work ethic and a set of values I shall live by to the best of my ability forever, even if it doesn't seem that way to you at times.
But I can't stop love. I've fallen for the boy you refuse to call by name. Your field hand. I'm not sure how it happened, but there's not a day that goes by without me yearning to be with him. I know you won't approve, but we've decided to elope. In time, I may return. I may not.
I'm sorry if this hurts you. I know how much the farm means to you, and that you need me to keep it going after you're gone, but I have to take this time to discover myself.
